Handwoven Vibeke Klint rug designed around 1980. 

The VK-1 rug has recently been set into production by NORDICMODERN in close collaboration with the Klint family as part of a collection of selected original Vibeke Klint designs.

It was Danish architect Arne Jacobsen’s wish that Vibeke Klint should design a number of rugs for The Danish National Bank. As always, Vibeke Klint was inspired by the architecture in which her rugs should lie. Her rugs for The Danish National Bank are no exception. The austere minimalist design that she drew for The Danish National Bank is based on a square in one corner and is as created for the functionalist building.

In the 1980s and 90s, Vibeke Klint often wove in a technique called warp repp. Unlike flat weave, where it is the weft that forms the pattern, it is the warp – the vertical thread – that forms the pattern.

Setting the loom up for a rug in warp repp takes up to 1 week, as there are 6 threads per. centimeter. This means that there are often well over 1000 warp threads in a rug.

Most often, she combined warp repp with flat weave technique in her characteristic details in a “lightning” pattern. This is a challenging combination, as the two techniques work against each other and are difficult to balance, i.e. that the edges align.

Vibeke Klint mastered the difficult art of limitation, which makes a design timeless, of which the VK-3 design is an excellent example.

Materials: Weft in English felted wool, warp in New Zealand wool with a 5 cm folded black edge.

Technique: Warp-repp with details (lightning) in flat weave. The rug is reversible and can withstand even heavy use. 100% New Zealand wool has a high lanolin content, making the rug naturally resistant to dirt. Available in two color combinations and five standard sizes.

Can also be customised in special sizes.
